Final Fantasy Tactics Designer Kickstarts New Strategy Game

by Ben Reeves on Jan 14, 2014 at 11:24 AM

Playdek, publishers of mobiles title like Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer and the board game conversion of Lords of Waterdeep, are teaming up with game designer Yasumi Matsuno to design a new game in the spirit of Final Fantasy Tactics.

Mr. Matsuno introduced us to his new strategy game, Unsung Story, back during Tokyo Game Show, but the famed director of titles like Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII recently teamed up with the publisher Playdek to launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise $600,000. The game was already planned for release on on iOS and Android, but the new cash would allow the company to bring the game to PC and Mac as well. The publisher has 3DS and Vita via stretch goals in place as well.

Unsung Story aims to re-imagine the classic RPG tactics genre that tells an epic tale stretching across a Seventy-Seven Years War. Each episode in the series will revolve around a new protagonist and cover the events of the war from a different vantage point. Units within your command each have their own professions, but the classes within those professions can be change to suit you tactical style.

Our Take
I find this really exciting. Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite games of all time, and I hope that Mr. Matsuno and Playdek earn much more than the $600,000 that they're aiming for, so that they can produce the best tactical game they possibly can.
