The lights are on
During playoff football this weekend, I was surprised to see a very charming commercial for Supercell’s free-to-play Clash of Clans. I recognized the art style and soldier types immediately, even though I haven't played the game in months. I stopped after hitting the paywall when I decided I didn't want to spend any money on it.
I’ve also been playing a lot of League of Legends lately (following a feature I wrote recently). I'm getting ready to buy in, which would make it the first time I've ever put money into a free-to-play game. Every time I've come close before, I've backed off.
What about you? When you play free-to-play games, do you ever take out your wallet? What motivates you to spend money on a game that could conceivably be played for free in perpetuity? If you’ve spent money on these “free” games, how much have they cost you?
I'd say between $100-$150 in 2 years. Mostly on League of Legends (I'm a sucker for skins).
It's fully playable without money though, I just like a few vanity skins on my favorite champions.
I never buy champions with real money unless it's a high priced one that is in the 50% off sale that I REALLY want.
I play a lot o free-to-play games and don't spend any money on them. There was only one time that I spent no more than 5$ when I bought in-game currency through SMS.
Between League of Legends and Clash of Clans and a few games on my phone I can't remember I've spent money on F2P games I really wish I hadn't. Now I have things in perspective a lot better and realize how trivial a game is in terms of spending money in F2P games. I'd rather grind now in LoL to earn the free currency from winning to unlock characters.
Around $50,which was on DC Universe Online and I bought the DLC.
Star Wars: The Old Republic abd DC Universe Online are the main ones for me. Cost me a lot of money. Its just a much better playing experience to be a subscriber then free-to-play with all the restrictions
Over 200 in the Need for Speed MMO. I'm a car fanatic. Some of my favorite purchases have been the the Shelby Daytona Coupe, Nissian GT-R(35), Audi Quattro 20 V and the El camino.
Not a cent. The model is basically a deal-breaker for me.
$0.
25$ on League Of Legends. :D (WORTH)
well if you think about it, YOU pay 60$ for console or pc games all at once already, and you MAY not like it. So if you pay 5 bux here and there is not so bad as compared to a full retail on say, a console game.which did u lose out on the most?
zero. usually because none are worth spending money on.
Sadly on the ios version of Injustice, I spent like 20 bucks! But it'll never happen again!
Played Cytus, a music game for phone. Only one payment of $1.99 to remove ads. More music requires more payments. However, the game has a player counter. If enough players pay the initial price, then new contents are released for free. In the beginning, I refused to pay, seeing there were only 3 free chapters of content. However, I kept the game for at least a year and ended up having 3 extra new chapters for free because of the player counter. What motivated me to pay? I still like the game after so long and the price isn't too bad. I guess if I actually see myself continuously playing a game (+2 years) and the one-time payment is under $3, I would pay. More like a small investment/donation to say "thank you."
Not one cent.
Put a few hundred into League because I'm a big fan of the developer and I've put more time into than any 60 release I've ever played. No regrets here

More than I'd like to admit.
