The lights are on
Sony's taking a new approach to backwards compatibility with PlayStation Now, a new streaming gaming service that will allow you to play titles from past generations of PlayStation on a variety of devices.
This is the service Sony has been working on since it acquired Gakai and, judging by the announcement today, is pretty ambitious - even promising the ability to stream games like The Last of Us directly to PlayStation Now-compatible tablets and Bravia televisions. However, this will come at a price, either a subscription or one-time rental fee.
What's your opinion of Sony's plans? Are you excited for the future of on-demand gaming? Or, would you rather have traditional, disc-based backwards compatibility that Sony left out of the PS4?
yeap! can't wait to test it out!
It sounds like a good idea but I have no desire to play old Sony games. PS1/PS2 games look really bad now and I already own the two PS3 games worth playing. Now if Nintendo did a service like that I would go out and buy a Wii U right now. I still haven't really seen a reason for me to get a PS4
It sounds cool, but it seems the intent is to get people to spend money on games that we have invested into already. A more appropriate name for the service is PlayStation PAST.
I would've liked to have traditional (no longer traditional) disc-based backwards compatibility but I'm interested to see how this plays out and if it'll work like they envision it. They've already added a fee to use PSN so I'm not sure how much more money PS4 owners are willing to pay to play games from previous generations.
If the prices aren't too high, this s really ideal for a lot of people who like to play games once like in a similar fashion to how they would watch on demand video streaming services. Basically binging on games for a low cost to get it out of their system or tick it off their list of things to play that they haven't. I'm sold on the concept, just waiting to hear the cost.
First and foremost, I'd like for it to work. If so, then at a reasonable price, it'll be amazing. Personally, I'm more on the side of physical copies of my games, but I'm not a Luddite. I'm willing to embrace genuine technical advancements like this.
Personally, I'd like to here more about it and how it works before getting too excited. Specifically, how much is the subscription fee, whether that allows me to play whatever games I want for however long I want, and whether it actually works. All the same, the PS4 is a great system and the PS3 had a lot of great games, a combination of the two can only be a good thing.
I am very excited about this feature, but frankly I was hoping that they would make your Psn games available to you... So that ps3 games purchased would not be lost to you if you get a ps4... I still will most likely be on the lookout for my personal favorites: FFXII, Fallout 3 and New Vegas (since I am one of those who could not figure the micro stutter plaige)... All in all I can't wait to see it come out.
I hope this is a free feature with Playstation plus. Otherwise its not gonna be something im interested in. Also I always thought the point of backwards compatibly was to play the games you already own on the next gen console NO EXTRA FEE INCLUDED. I know most peoples answer is going to be "Derp JUST KEEP YOU PS3 NOOB Derp" or "Derp IF YOU DONT LIKE IT DONT BUY IT Derp". I have yet to buy A PS4 and i was hoping that by the time I did there would be a way to play my entire library of Playstation games on it without having to switch between multiple consoles. Guess that's just a fleeting dream. (sigh) I missed the simpler gaming days when the industry bowed to us now its seems we are the ones doing the bowing just accepting whatever they throw at us with a smile on our faces.
Latency will kill it.
I'm quite excited about it. Unlike most I've never really had an extensive "game library," i've often traded in a few games to get one game. For that reason when I traded in my ps3 towards a ps4 I did not have many games. I would love something like netflix that allows me to try games out that I might have missed, some I'm thinking of is Arkham Origins and the new gta. I agree the price will be the sticking factor and latency, if it works as well as they are suggesting it would be awesome.
Assuming they dont charge an arm and a leg, Im pretty excited. I would hope they just make this a part of the cross platform support they offer now so anything digital that I have purchased can be streamed from the start.
I think it's a great idea and will be highly successful, as long as it is implemented correctly and works properly. It would be a shame to turn out like OnLive.
Hell yeah,if it means I can just get the last of Us and Ninokuni on the PS4 I am so up for that.
I am pretty interested in the service and the possibilities that it provides. I see a lot of comments complaining about Internet speeds and whatnot and I feel for them if it gates them out of this possibility. Where I live I get very good ISP speed that I pay for so it won't be too much of an issue for me. I would like to see what the costs are per month and per game but overall I am looking forward to hearing more from Sony about this service.
I'm LOVIN IT
As long as the price is reasonable I'll probably will get it. A lot of games i've been wanting to play and never got to.
