Wii U GamePad Life Extending High-Capacity Battery Now Available From Nintendo

by Kyle Hilliard on Dec 21, 2013 at 11:44 AM

One of the complaints often levied against the Wii U, is the disappointing battery life of its GamePad. Nintendo is now offering a new longer-lasting, high-capacity battery to replace the old one.

The battery is available on Nintendo's online store for $32. It's not an accessory add-on for the GamePad, but rather a replacement battery for the internal one in the controller. You'll have to break out a screwdriver to replace it. This new battery extends the GamePad's life from the standard three to five hours, to approximately eight. You can buy the battery here.

Our Take
I knew that Nintendo would find a way to increase the GamePad's battery life eventually, but I was curious if it would be possible without replacing the whole GamePad unit, or adding a bulky accessory. This seems like a pretty straightforward solution. Considering the number of times I have had to plug in the GamePad while in the middle of a game, this is something I could definitely see myself buying.
