Video Game Documentary Series Coming Exclusively To Xbox

by Mike Futter on Dec 19, 2013 at 02:31 AM

Microsoft has announced today the first Xbox Entertainment Studios (XES) project, which will begin filming in January. The documentary series will kick off with an investigation of the 1983 Atari E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial burial in New Mexico.

This is a new partnership that builds on an arrangement Canadian film company Fuel Industries struck with the town of Alamogordo, New Mexico. The XES project will team award-winning producers Simon Chinn (Man on Wire) and Jonathan Chinn (FX’s 30 Days) and their company, Lightbox, with a number of filmmakers.

Zak Penn (X-Men 2) will direct the documentary and will film Fuel’s excavation. When complete, the documentary will air on Xbox 360 and Xbox One wherever Xbox Live is available.

Our Take
We often joke about games and accessories going to join E.T. in the desert (uDraw, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Virtual Boy), which makes this documentary particularly interesting. I’m curious to see what the burial site looks like and what, if anything, remains of Atari’s biggest failure.
