QR Codes Finally Have A Purpose Thanks To Borderlands 2's LootTheWorld App

by Mike Futter on Dec 12, 2013 at 05:15 AM

2K Games and Gearbox have released a new app that puts Borderlands 2 loot in the palm of your hands. With the LootTheWorld app, you’ll be able to scan QR codes and turn them into unlockable in-game loot.

Here’s how it works. First, download the free app from the App Store or the Google Play Store. Then, login with your Shift account. Finally, press the “Shoot” button to scan any QR code you can find to turn it into unlockable loot.

You’ll start with three stamps, each of which can be traded for one item to be sent to your in-game character. More stamps can be earned with some QR codes (keep an eye on @GearboxSoftware on Twitter). You can store 20 items for later unlocking (in case something is a bit overleveled for you), and you can delete ones you don’t want individually.

Each user also gets their own QR code to share with friends (mine is below). Have fun looting, and share your best finds in the comments below.

Our Take
This app is a nifty idea that takes the concept of the old Monster Rancher games by repurposing existing content. I’ll be diving back into Borderlands 2 and will now be keeping an eye out for QR codes everywhere.
