Reader Discussion: What Did You Think Of VGX Live?

by Kyle Hilliard on Dec 08, 2013 at 04:35 AM

A new format made Spike's annual video game awards show feel much different than years past. What did you think?

Rather than display a spectacle comparable to something like Mtv's Video Music Awards as it has done previously, this year's awards (retitled VGX) went for a more casual, laid-back presentation. On the one-hand, it offered opportunities for extended conversations with the developers, and longer demo presentations, but on the other hand it felt severely unrehearsed.

Joel McHale appeared as co-host, but made it pretty clear in both his speech and demeanor that he was not interested in video games, or being present. As a comedic performer, sarcastic indifference is sort of his thing, but I'm not sure that it worked for an awards show.

The highlight of the night, if social media is any indication, was independent developer Hello Games' No Man's Sky. There were other reveals, like Telltale's Borderlands and Game of Thrones games, two Titanfall reveals, Broken Age details, the reveal of Cranky Kong for Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Tomb Raider coming to next-gen consoles, and many others. Were they worthwhile reveals? Are you glad you watched the show? Let us know in the comments below.
