Bring Morrowind's Content To Skyrim With Skywind Mod

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is just over two years old, but it continues to capture the imagination of modders from around the world. Earlier today, we shared with you the story of Alexander Velinsky, who used Bethesda's RPG as the canvas for a job application. Now, we're showing you how to experience a classic Elder Scrolls title in a new way.

The mod is called Skywind, and it updates the content of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind to take advantage of Skyrim's advanced features. In order to make it work, you'll need a licensed copy of both Morrowind (with Bloodmoon and Tribunal expansions) and Skyrim. Pirated copies won't work even though the content runs off of Skyrim.

Elements like crafting and smithing aren't implemented in the most current build (0.9). The skill system, which offered more options in Morrowind, is streamlined to fit the Skyrim approach. The armor system will be Morrowind's, though.

The Morroblivion community will begin updating Oblivion in the same fashion as Morrowind once the Skywind project is complete. If you're interested in trying the incomplete conversion, you can download it on the group's website.

Thanks to reader Lorenzo for the tip.

Our Take
More and more developers are embracing the mod community, whether through the Steam Workshop or with groups of users like the Morroblivion group and those over at the Skyrim Nexus like the S.T.E.P. team. Publishers like Deep Silver are also starting to let users more easily create new experiences. Expect this trend to continue on PC.
