The lights are on
Now that the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 have launched, we are officially in the next-generation of video gaming. The Wii U launched last year. Do you consider it a next-gen console?
Technically, next-gen is no longer an applicable term. With the new consoles upon us, we are now in the current-gen, but the question still remains: when we talk about the current (or next, depending on what you're comfortable with) generation of gaming, is the Wii U part of it?
I have a lot of love for the Wii U, especially after playing Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, and Wind Waker HD this year. Despite my personal appreciation for the Wii U, however, I still catch myself thinking in terms of the next-generation consoles... and the Wii U. I don't group them together, and I'm not sure why. As the Wii U's library expands, I think it can certainly compete with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and even though it started out with disappointing sales, it has been showing a lot of growth.
What do you think? Do you group the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U together, like we did the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube? Or is Nintendo just off to the side, doing its own thing, bucking trends, and mostly ignoring the competition in its own non-current-gen world?

I just can't compare the WIIU to the PS4. I dont' have an xbox one so can't comment there. But the PS4 is just as the PS3 was; a far superior machine. I had the 360, I the Wii, I had the ps3 etc. If there was a console out there, I owned it at one time and there has never been a complete entertainment gaming system comparable to the PS3; oh until now and its the PS4. Its just a better system, it just is.
I haven't heard very impressive things about the WIIU and I worked for a video game rental company until a week ago. Just no one seems to think its anything competitive to the 360 or ps3 and now we have the ps4 and xbox one which are only super improved versions of the last consoles. So I cant imagine we could consider the WIIU to be relevant compared to other systems....do u disagree?
Definitely! Power difference, graphics, or technology are irrelevent when it comes to next gen. The Wii U may not be as powerful or technilogically advanced as the other 2, but it is still a new console. Anyone who insults it has clearly never played it's best games.
Generations are based on time periods, not quality or graphics.
im going to be honest i love nintendo i will be getting a wii u but in regards being a next gen system no till its hardware and software content matches what its suppose to be in this courrent generation which i highly doubt nintendo would rework and put out a reworked wiiu it will be what i consider the xbox 360 to be jus a mild upgrade to their consoles be4 them
That would be like saying that the PS1 and the N64 weren't in the same generation of game consoles. The PS1 launched the year before and was inferior, spec wise, to that of the N64.
They both offered different gaming experiences. They both had their own unique set of pros and cons. They both had shared multiplatform games, as well as exclusive IPs. They both had their own particular controller configurations and accessories.
Yet, no one debates on whether they were in the same "generation" or not. To me the term generation is just an easy way of referring to the game systems of the time. Just as the Wii was seventh generation, the Wii U is eighth generation.
I'd say that technically, the Wii U is very much a next gen console. It's the successor of the Wii. That makes it just as "next gen" as the PS4 or Xbox One.
Yes
Yes, same thing happened with the PS3 and 360 right? mostly because Wii graphics weren't really part of the "new generation" also because, sadly, most gamers are looking violence, blood and great graphics in a game without seeing what nintendo does: great stories, good gameplay and above all that: ensure gamers have fun with its games.
I believe the Wii U is definitely a "next-gen" console but I believe the games and marketing of the system do the system itself an injustice. Many of the features that are being revered in the XBOX One and PS4 are in the Wii U in some shape/form/fashion (using your gaming system to control what you watch ie TV, use of apps like Hulu Plus and YouTube, video chatting) but because of the lack of appeal for some reason (maybe the Wii left a bitter taste in many gamers' mouths) these features and the gaming systems pros are ignored, along with the variety of games.
eh i would love to say yes cuz i love nintendo ,but to be truthful its like 1/2 a gen past the wii
Absolutely it's next gen. It's the only next gen system I've gotten so far, and it's the bomb! It has great games and coupled with all of Nintendo's world-famous IP, it's def. competetive. Also, it runs in 1080p, something the Xbox 1 doesn't do. So, maybe, Xbox should be the awkwardly between gen's console?
Yes... Period.
I mean what is the actual definition of "next-gen?" Personally I would consider the Wii U to be part of the "next-fen" consoles, for the main reason of the consecutive cycle of the generation. Although they need to work a little harder on naming their consoles next time...
