John Carmack Departs Id Software

by Mike Futter on Nov 22, 2013 at 08:23 AM

In early August, Oculus VR announced that id Software co-founder John Carmack had signed on as chief technology officer. At the time, id was quick to reassure fans that one of the minds behind Doom was staying on board in some capacity.

Today, IGN reports that Carmack has left id to focus on Oculus VR. “John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio," Tim Willits, id Software studio director, told the outlet.

Carmack leaves behind a legacy, including id Tech 5, which is the basis for the studio’s current projects. Earlier this year, id president Todd Hollenshead also departed. Recently, Oculus hired Matt Hooper, another former id employee, to serve as director of development.

Our Take
Carmack’s departure from id isn’t really a surprise. Even for someone as smart as him, balancing two full-time jobs is nearly impossible. Carmack leaves a brilliant legacy behind him at Id, and we’ve no doubt only seen the beginnings of his new work at Oculus VR.
