Report: Telltale Working On A Game Of Thrones Project

by Matt Bertz on Nov 21, 2013 at 11:52 AM

George R.R. Martin's best-selling book series, "A Song of Ice and Fire," exploded into the public conscious when HBO began airing its television adaptation, A Game of Thrones. But despite its massive popularity, the series has never generated a strong video game lineage. Last year, Cyanide Studios released a universally panned role-playing game, but the potential for the series in interactive media is undeniable. Enter Telltale Games.

According to a report from IGN, the studio is hard at work developing a video game spin-off.  The sources have allegedly revealed the game's existence, but shared little else about the project. It's unknown whether Telltale acquired the rights for the book series or the HBO adaptation. When reached for comment, Telltale senior vice president of publishing Steve Allison said, "We get these sorts of rumors about what we could be working on next cropping up all the time. Officially we have no comment."

Telltale is currently in the midst of developing two series, The Walking Dead and A Wolf Among Us.

Our Take:
Given the mass hysteria surrounding A Game of Thrones, another video game adaptation was inevitable. Though many of us in the office are hoping for an open-world, Skyrim-style game set in Westeros, the idea of a narrative-driven game is also extremely appealing. How Telltale could fit this high profile project into its already jam-packed schedule is another question altogether. Given its commitments to The Walking Dead and A Wolf Among Us, we wouldn't expect the game to appear any time soon – assuming it's actually in development.
