Nintendo Not Ruling Out More Super Mario Galaxy

by Kyle Hilliard on Nov 16, 2013 at 08:50 AM

In a new Iwata Asks feature covering the development of Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U, Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, says that we may see more Mario Galaxy some day.

Super Mario 3D World is a 3D Mario game, but it is distinct from the Super Mario Galaxy games that released on the Wii, having more in common with Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS. In the recent Iwata Asks feature, where Nintendo president Satoru Iwata asks the development teams of assorted Nintendo games about production, he asked producer Yoshiaki Koizumi about about Super Mario Galaxy. Koizuma said he had regrets about Galaxy, mainly the game's lack of multiplayer. It's a function Nintendo has wanted to include in 3D Mario, and even experimented with, as far back as Super Mario 64, so the team was excited to be able to build a game around it with Super Mario 3D World.

After that discussion, Miyamoto stepped in to assure that more Mario Galaxy may be on the way saying, "Just so there is no misunderstanding, I should point out that this doesn't mean we'll never make another Super Mario Galaxy game." He went on to explain that the Mario team couldn't be split between Mario projects, and that he and Nintendo wouldn't want to create a sub-par Mario Galaxy game by bringing in unfamiliar developers.

Our Take
As much as I enjoyed Super Mario 3D Land for 3DS, I have to admit I was a little disappointed that the next 3D Mario game would not be a new Super Mario Galaxy or similar game. I am very happy to learn that Nintendo still has plans for Mario games with large expansive levels.
