NECA Inks Deal With 343 Industries For Halo Merchandise

The National Entertainment Collectibles Association has signed a monster deal to bring out the wide array of Halo-themed merchandise.

NECA will be creating new lines of Halo collectibles, which will be released starting in April, 2014.

NECA president Joel Weinshanker said, "We are thrilled to be part of a franchise with such wide-reaching impact. Bringing the rich universe of Halo to tangible form is an honor, and we'll be working closely with 343 Industries to ensure Halo's loyal fans around the world are pleased with the result."

The plans are ambitious and include items like 1:4 scale action figures, mini figures, prop replicas, board games, and HeoClix miniatures. Oh yeah, and Department of Transportion-approved motorcycle helmets, to which 343's franchise development director Frank O'Connor commented, "I won't lie, the idea of cruising around on my motorbike with a Halo-inspired DOT approved helmet gives me goose bumps."

Our Take:
Microsoft created 343 Industries as a way to treat Halo like an overarching entertainment franchise with elements that expand beyond games, and it's been true to its mission. This is just another example of the effort that has already led to things like the digital live action series Forward Unto Dawn. I could be cynical and decry such crass commercialism...or admit that a Master Chief motorcycle helmet is pretty damn cool. I also like the board game idea - more and more game properties are tapping into that growing market.
