Microsoft Shows Off Fast QR Code Reading On Xbox One

by Mike Futter on Nov 06, 2013 at 09:12 AM

You might recall that the Xbox One can read QR codes via the Kinect 2.0 sensor. This will serve as an alternative to inputting 25-character codes. If you’ve ever used a QR Code reader, you know that they can be a bit finicky. That doesn’t seem to be a problem with the Xbox One.

In the Vine below, you can see how quickly Microsoft director of Xbox Live programming Larry Hryb is able to get the Xbox One to read his code. (Hint: Vines cap at six seconds.)

Given the prevalence of pre-order bonuses and online passes (though those seem to be riding into the sunset), this should get people into the game faster. We’ll be able to try it out for ourselves come November 22, when the Xbox One launches in North America.

Our Take
I am looking forward to seeing if this works as well in a home environment with unpredictable lighting. If it does, I’ll be glad to never enter another 25-digit code ever again.
