Diablo III Has Sold Over 14 Million Copies Across Platforms, Auction Houses Gone In March

During its third-quarter financial earnings call, Activision announced that Diablo III has sold over 14 million copies across platforms. The title is currently available on PC/Mac, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It will be coming to PS4 in 2014.

Blizzard attributes the success of the console version to the control scheme and the removal of the auction house from the console version.  Michael Morhaime, Blizzard president and co-founder, says that it makes for a “more fun and satisfying game experience.”

This has led Blizzard to remove the auction houses from the game, which will take place in March. This may not correlate directly to the release window for Reaper of Souls, as Morhaime stated that the expansion will be coming to PC/Mac and PS4 in 2014.

Our Take
Diablo III is a lot of fun on consoles, and I’m hopeful that Reaper of Souls will eventually make its way to current-gen. If not, I’ll be tempted to return to PC (or play on PS4) to experience the new content, as what I’ve learned of it has me excited. The removal of the auction houses is a smart move, and will hopefully lure players back.
