Wii Also Discontinued In Europe
It seems like the United States might be the last region standing with active Wii shipments. After earlier reports that production was shut down in Japan, Nintendo has confirmed that European imports have ceased.
The news comes by way of MCV, which received comment from Nintendo. "Wii imports to Europe have been discontinued," Nintendo told the publication.
The company was quick to point out that the Wii U can play Wii software and can make use of the existing peripherals. The Wii Mini is still on shelves in European territories. That console features no internet access or Gamecube backward compatibility.

Our Take
I still think it's the right move for Nintendo to clear old hardware off the shelves as fast as possible. The longer Wii Us sit next Wiis, the harder it will be to explain the difference. It will be far easier when retailers can simply point customers to the Wii U, tell them it plays Wii software and new titles, and share that it's the only option. In this case, choice isn't a good thing for customers or Nintendo.
