The lights are on
Irrational Games co-founder and creative director Ken Levine will be recognized with a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Joysticks this Friday. This is the first time that a lifetime achievement award will be presented at the ceremony.
Levine's credits include System Shock 2, BioShock, and BioShock Infinite. We had the chance to play the upcoming BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea Episode 1 DLC recently and interview Levine about the title. The first part of the Burial at Sea story will be out this holiday, with the conclusion due in 2014.
The Golden Joystick Awards will be held in London, England, at the Westminster Park Plaza Hotel this Friday, October 25, 2013.
Our TakeKen Levine is a fantastic storyteller, and I've enjoyed speaking with him about BioShock Infinite and his approach to that game's mysteries. I enjoyed Burial at Sea Part 1 and look forward to conversing with others once it's released later this year.

I think Ken is a great game designer but a life time acheivment award? no. at least not yet. There are several other game designers that have been in the business longer and have had more successes. Miyamoto comes to mind..... The man practically invented modern game design as well as rebuilt the game market after the crash of 83. We wouldnt have the games we have without that man.
Putting aside the fact that I consider a game being a team work before all, I don't think that the award is deserved, at least not yet.
But hey, who knows what's behind this ? And after all it's just an award given by a group of people... Only time really gives the truly deserved award (...sometimes).
I like Ken Levine but if you really look at the games he has made and how many he has made I'm not so sure he deserves this. Whilst I think Bioshock was epic in ways that very few games could reach, Infinite had too many faults to reach that same level and I never played System Shock 2 do I don't know much about that. Need a few more titles under his belt to receive this, just my 2 cents.
Fine by me. He's the main creative force behind my favorite game of all time, that's worth something.
I love Kevin Levine as a storyteller and game designer. Bioshock and Infinite sit at the very top of what amazing games are. But Lifetime achievement? No way. He's made 2-4 decent games that I've played. This award should go to Hideo Kojima or someone who's actually had a lifetime of creating fantastic games and memories.
This is way too premature. Levine still (I assume) has many years ahead to continue wowing his fans before he should be given an award like this. Levine is one of the greatest storytellers the medium has ever seen, this is true, but the end of his career is hopefully a good long while away. Even so, congratulations are in order.
Congrats to him.
I'd say he's done an excellent job so far.
Love or hate the games....he is one hell of a writer and I feel he deserves the award. Those games were different and riveting. No one can deny they have never seen anything like them.
Bioshock Infinite was a complete disappointment to me. Great story but gameplay that sacrificed everything that made Bioshock great. Ken still deserves this honor though.
Who the heck is this guy? What has he ever done for video games?
Jk, luv ya Levine
Ken Levine completely deserves this, The "Shock" games are the only games I can actually spend hours just reading, or listening to his brilliant writing.
Isn't it a little early for a lifetime achievement award for Levine? He's still a pretty young guy. Just sayin'.
These awards are a joke.
