Sony Delays Driveclub Into 2014

by Mike Futter on Oct 18, 2013 at 12:46 AM

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida has announced that launch title Driveclub won't be here next month. In fact, it won't be here this year at all. The retail and PlayStation Plus versions have been delayed until 2014.

The title was supposed to launch alongside the PlayStation 4 on November 15 in the United States. A limited version was also slated as the first PS4 Instant Game Collection title.

It will be replaced in the lineup by Compulsion Games' Contrast. The delay of Driveclub follows Ubisoft's announcement that Watch Dogs, a title heavily co-marketing with Sony, is also being significantly delayed.

Our Take
The only people this is good for are PS4 early adopters who don't like racing sims. Contrast is shaping up nicely, and it's not a bad title to be included in the Instant Game Collection right away.

Sony's been making missteps left and right lately. First, the company dialed back its hardware compatibility for existing gaming headsets (it's own PS3 models won't even work at launch). Now, its first-party software lineup is taking a major hit.

We still haven't seen much of the user interface, and I'm starting to get concerned that the PS4 isn't ready for primetime. I hope I'm wrong, but Sony needs to start rebuilding confidence now.
