Layoffs Hit 2K Games' Marin Studio

by Mike Futter on Oct 17, 2013 at 09:52 AM

We just received a statement from 2K Games indicating that layoffs have hit the publisher. The layoffs come out of 2K Marin, the studio responsible for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

"We can confirm staff reductions at 2K Marin," a representative told Game Informer. "While these were difficult decisions, we regularly evaluate our development efforts and have decided to reallocate creative resources. Our goal to create world-class video game titles remains unchanged."

Recently, 2K hired on former Epic Games director of production and Irrational Games vice president of development Rod Fergusson. Fergusson is said to be leading a new studio in the San Francisco area.

Our thoughts are with those affected by the layoffs.

Our Take
It's unfortunate when layoffs happen, and after the critical reception and retail performance of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, it's not entirely surprising to hear that 2K Marin has been affected.

I liked the team's take on the XCOM universe, and while it didn't suit many, it did have a certain appeal. I hope those affected are able to find new opportunities soon.
