Blizzard Renames Its All Stars MOBA To Heroes Of The Storm

by Mike Futter on Oct 17, 2013 at 10:53 AM

It began its life as Blizzard Dota, but after a tiff with Valve, the company opted to rename its in-progress multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title. It seems that the Blizzard All-Stars name isn't sticking around, though. You can now call it Heroes of the Storm.

We reported on the Heroes of the Storm trademark filing in late September. Now that the title has a name, perhaps we'll learn more about what makes it different than all the other MOBAs. You can see the cute name change announcement video below.

Our Take
The MOBA genre fits such a narrow set of expectations that it's hard for those coming to the genre new to understand what sets the games apart. Lanes, minions, towers, etc. all seem consistent across titles. It will be interesting to see if Blizzard is able to do something different with its contribution to the genre and whether the company will be able to lure fans of its other games.
