The lights are on
In a new interview, BioWare writer Mac Walters gives some insight into the direction the next Mass Effect.
Speaking to Complex at the New York Comic-Con, Walters put to rest speculation that the next installment of the series would be a prequel or focus on Commander Shepard's companions.
Walters said, "I can't get into details, but the idea is that we have agreed to tell a story that doesn't relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever. Beyond that, that's what we've been deciding for awhile. But throughout it all, one of the key things is that it has to be Mass Effect. It can't just feel like a spin-off. It has to feel like a Mass Effect game at its heart, at its core. Just without the Shepard character or the Shepard specific companions."
Our Take:Fans might be disappointed, but I'm excited to hear that BioWare is going in a completely different direction. I've always hoped that the protagonist of the next Mass Effect saga might be a member of an alien race.

Couldn't give any less of a *** what people said about Mass Effect 3, I'm ready for some more Mass Effect regardless.
This is great news, Shephard will always be a favorite of mine but his grand and epic story has been put to rest. I'm looking forward to see who the new protagonist is of this next series of games.
Humans ARE the aliens!
I'm fine with not being Shepard. My guess is this game'll be about the First Contact War with the Turians, and the human's first dealings with the Citadel races. That part of the Mass Effect universe is dying to be explored by a full-length, AAA Bioware game.
I want a game set thousands of years before humans join the galactic community. I think the Dawn War, the Rachni War, and the Krogan Rebellions would all be great settings. A direct sequel, even set in the same universe, would have awful canonical consequences and is not a good idea.
I like the idea about a new character that is not Shepard, but not relating it to ANY event occurred, then whats the point calling it mass effect? Or is it a prequel?
I would thoroughly enjoy being able to choose the race I get to play as, a Turian bounty hunter and a Krogan mercenary. (:
But they must have Mass Effect in the title or it won't sell!
Well that's kindof cool.
Just as long as I can romance Aria, and Liara's dad, I'm good.
All I want is a male quarian companion, romance optional. Garrus has a sexy, sexy voice, but the purr on the male quarians is just as potent. If we can see the quarians sans suits, even better!
Good. To me, Shepard was integral to the trilogy, but for the ME universe to continue, they should definitely explore new characters and avenues. I'll bet that a few fan favorites make a cameo or two though.
I'm pretty sure this has been established for a while now...
I am excited for this turn of events in ME. Hoping that they go in a different arc or story direction. I'd like to see them take it from the direction of a Garrus or someone like that. How did the Reaper affect them? Something along those lines.
This is exactly what they should do. Let the previous story stand on its own and start something new.
More details before I decide if the game is worth my time or not.
