The lights are on
Yesterday we shared with you a video in which a Microsoft representative claimed that the Xbox One will automatically record video of all of your achievements. That's not exactly accurate.
The information was corrected on NeoGAF by Albert Penello, Microsoft's director of product planning. We confirmed that the person claiming to be Penello on NeoGAF is, in fact, him.
"It won't be automatic for every Achievement," Penello writes. "It's a feature that Developers can unlock for achievements, OR, for instance, have hidden in the game for doing something cool or discovering something hidden. Basically we allow developers access to GameDVR and they can put conditions on an automatic recording."
We also received this comment from Microsoft clarifying the matter.
"Xbox One keeps a rolling record of your most recent gameplay, and there are two main ways for this video to be captured by Game DVR," a Microsoft representative told us. "First, game developers mark 'greatest clips' that happen within the game that represent fun and interesting moments within gameplay, such as when you unlock certain Achievements. Additionally, you can also issue commands, with either your voice or the controller, to capture interesting moments you would like to record or that just happened."
While it's conceivable that developers could set up their games to automatically record all achievements, it's not a blanket feature.
Our TakeWhile many cheered the fact that all of our achievements would be cataloged, the truth actually has more potential. Triggering during key moments of the game as well as some achievements (possibly all, if a developer chooses) is a broader use of the DVR's capability. I'm eager to see how this is implemented and just hope that we don't end up with thousands of cookie-cutter clips.

Time to record some inevitable controversial moment in a game before it gets patched out.
Nice cant wait to see how the system turns out in a couple months
this is actually cool. props to MS for trying to be unique, for the most part.
This feature sounds really cool. I agree with the thousand cookie cutter clips not so cool, maybe that should be optional to the individual consumer via in game options. I don't want to run out of space after five games. I'm interested to see how this will be implemented on XB1 via game developers as well.
It seems like every day a Microsoft employee says something and then another one has to clarify what the first one said the next day. It's gotten to the point where I don't trust any of the news about the One.
you guys worry about having too many clips or something..relax im pretty sure you can delete them
I do like the more clarified option rather that just automatically recording achievements.
great news, cant wait to pick up my xbox one, and id like to thank sony for providing the competition so that i may have a better xbox one. keep it coming.
