The lights are on
In a new interview Sony's head of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida reveals some good news: Team Ico's The Last Guardian is still in development, and being "re-engineered", possibly for PlayStation 4.
When asked about the game in an interview with GamesIndustry International, Yoshida said, "So, we're waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian in an appropriate way. I can't... Well, the game is in development, and it's well staffed, and [Ico creator Fumito] Ueda-san is here, working - even though he's not a Sony employee, he's dedicated to the product. But we're not ready to update yet."
He also made an interesting comment when asked about which system the game will be released for. After declining to answer specifically, he said, "They're going through the re-engineering of the game, so the team size is smaller, because it's more engineering focused right now."
This is great news, as many in the industry were beginning to wonder if the highly anticipated game would ever seen the light of day.

Our Take:While Yoshida-san didn't come right out and say it, it seems pretty clear that the game is now headed for PlayStation 4. I don't know what else "re-engineering" a game with a smaller staff could possibly mean. If so, it seems like the right move to me. Why squander a great title on a system that's days are numbered? I'm so excited to hear the The Last Guardian is still alive.

I knew that the game was going to come out, it just made better sense to release it on PS4.
Blah Blah... Enough fueling the fire on this. We all can't wait to see this game, but I for one am getting tired of hearing pointless updates on it. Until there is new video of gameplay, this kind of news should just be buried
i still want it
So we can expect this to be released on the PS5?
Re-engineering is no small task, especially for a Japanese studio that is resistant to middleware. Completely remaking the game's tech base, piece-by-piece? No wonder we haven't heard from this in ages. I feel bad for the whole team.
But hopefully the actual CONTENT of the game is locked down and all we have to wait for is the technical stuff and art to get redone. I sincerely hope we get some bonus features on the final game's disc (or download) that show off some of the PS3 version. Much like how the Team Ico HD Collection had videos of NICO and the PSX version of Ico. This stuff is interesting.
Hasn't even been in development that long. Whiny gamers today, growing up with the Xbox1 (the actual Xbox1, not the XBone)... feh. Before stupid megapublishers conditioned your dumb little kid brains to expect a new, disposable sequel every year, REAL gamers had to wait SEVEN YEARS between Metroid sequels (the gap between Super Metroid and Metroid Prime), 6 years between Zelda games (A Link to the Past to Ocarina of Time) and 5 years between Sonic sequels (Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure).
Good games take time to create. Team ICO is not interested in pumping out Call of Duty, Dead Space, or Assassin's Creed here. We should support it when developers take that stance, and care about what they do. Instead of having the attitude of, "Eh, there's always next year's version".
If this gets announced for PS4, I'll buy one immediately.
These notes of half-information concerning this game seem like cruel teases to the Sony fans who have been waiting for this game for so long. Especially since none of it is ever so concrete as a release date.
Hope it still comes to PS3.
Come back and talk about the game when you can give us an actual release date. Because anything short of that means the game is in permanent limbo and will never see the light of day.
Re-engineered likely means that it's being re-coded. I'm guessing that just about all the visual and game designs are in place. We know what everything is going to look and play like, but just can't get it to work. So, it probably has to be re-coded so the game delivers on everything that the designers want the game to be.
I really appreciate SCE for sticking with the project. Team Ico games have never been a huge blockbuster, but excel on the creative front. So, I really love Sony for sticking with the project and believing in the game. That's something that just doesn't happen these days.
At least it's still in development. That's enough to make me happy.
I sure hope they are making it for the PS4!
I like having news about The Last Guardian, but I want a release date or cancellation so everyone can have some much needed closure.
So! They doing the same thing Square-Enix is doing with Final Fantasy XV!
I'm so happy it's still in development.
This is great news. This will be huge for the PS4. I hope they get the game out and make it just the way they want it to be.
