The lights are on
If you've got an hour to kill (perhaps once Grand Theft Auto Online is up and running well), you might want to update your Wii U. The new version of the console's operating system adds some new features, including the ability to output Wii titles to your Wii U gamepad. Before you get started, Nintendo is warning that if you've modified your system by installing custom firmware or hardware, the update could render your Wii U unplayable. In addition to giving you a way to play Wii titles off-TV, you'll also now be able to use USB keyboards, automatically download demos and output Wii titles using Dolby Pro Logic II.For the full patch notes, visit Nintendo's support site.[Source: Nintendo]Our TakeWhen the Wii U's off-TV play works, it's great. While watching football this weekend, I played Scribblenauts Unlimited. Unfortunately, walking through the door into the next room caused the gamepad to disconnect.I don't understand the value of playing a Wii game off-screen with the console's traditional controls. For a title like Smash Bros., it can work just fine, but anything with waggle will require more precise positioning that makes off-TV play impractical.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on the gamepad.... AWESOME!
Got it last night, played through Contra ReBirth on the GamePad. I hope this is a first step in an overall streamlining of the system--namely, allowing the GamePad to take the place of a Classic Controller for Wii games that worked with the controller, and merging the downloaded Wii game library with the regular Wii U library so I don't have to go one or two levels in to access a downloaded Wii game on an SD card--otherwise known as THE WAY THE 3DS WORKS.
Still, one of the better updates they've had for the system.
Glad this update came out. So many great features added.
i'm thinking the whole point of making it so 'wii' games can be played on it is really mostly for those who trasfered their wii data to wii you and now they can play VC titles on it instead of tv only or waiting for them to go up in wii u eshop with the discounted price n such to playthem on the gamepad.
This only allows your game pad to act as a second screen. You still cannot use the game pad to control wii vc games, wii games, or anything on the wii. It can use the Wii u camera IR to pick up your wii remote.
This is a very unexpected, but pleasant surprise. I have siblings who want to play the wii u all the time, but it is connected to my computer monitor. This allows them to play off screen and still allow me to use my stuff.
This is great and will get much use by me. Now Nintendo just needs to release a GamePad with WiFi!!! I would buy one for $99 easy! :)
Should be good if I want to play Radiant Dawn, while my brother is playing something else. Although he is hogging the Wii U for Wind Waker HD, so that might not work so well.
ah yes, finally!
