Precursor Games Halts Shadow Of The Eternals Development

by Kyle Hilliard on Sep 29, 2013 at 04:55 AM

Shadow of the Eternals, the Kickstarter hopeful successor to Eternal Darkness, missed its pledge mark, and the developer has announced that it is halting development.

The project has had its share of hiccups with a canceled and relaunched Kickstarter, legal problems, and then it was not able to reach its Kickstarter goal.

Denis Dyack posted a message on the official Precursor Games message boards saying the team is taking a break. Hope is not completely lost for the game as Dyack answered everyone's first question: is the project dead? "No, but we feel it needs a rest," Dyack said. It's unclear if, when, or in what form Shadow of the Eternals will return, but Dyack seems to believe the team will pick the project back up at some point in the future.

You can check out the full text of the message that appeared on the Shadow of the Eternals message boards below.

It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to put the Shadow of the Eternals project on hold. We are very happy with what we have accomplished both as a group and with the community. The community has blown us away and was the one thing that kept us going through it all – we cannot thank you enough.

Many of us will be taking a break. For those who are not aware, we all worked on this project as a labor of love and self financed 100% of everything for a over a year to try to make Shadow of the Eternals a reality. Although we did not succeed on doing this, we succeeded in making many friends and starting something that we hope provided value for those involved. We have no regrets.

Denis, Phil and Aaron have decided to continue to run the forums for those who wish to stay hang out and talk. Denis, Phil and Aaron will also be taking a break but will be around posting and talking with everyone when they can. Others from Precursor will also be popping in from time to time.

Is the project dead? No, but we feel it needs a rest too. We have all agreed as a group that when and if the time is right we will get together and start it up again.

Keep your head high everyone and remember what we have accomplished together.

Our Take
Despite good intentions, and the excitement surrounding the prospect of a sequel to Eternal Darkness, Shadow of the Eternals has been plagued with issues since its original announcement. It's disappointing, but not too surprising that Precursor has decided to put the game on hold. I would still like to see the final game someday, but I am not confident that we will be seeing or even hearing from the game anytime soon.
