Valve Teases Announcement That 'The Steam Universe Is Expanding'

At 1 PM Eastern on Monday, September 23, 2013, we're going to get our first look at what Gabe Newell teased earlier this week at LinuxCon. Based on the image, it looks like the long-anticipated SteamBox could finally be coming.

"Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads," the website states. "This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room. Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam."

We'll be checking in on this on Monday when what is likely only the first piece of this news is revealed. (Update: Valve has issued a release stated that there will be three separate announcements next week, the first of which will be on Monday.)

Our Take
With its library and publisher partnerships, Valve is positioned to give Sony and Microsoft a run for their money in the living room. If the device is priced appropriately, easy to use, and marketed in such a way that parents and more casual gamers can feel comfortable, the landscape could shift dramatically.
