Metal Gear Solid V Current-Gen Versus Next-Gen Performance Detailed

by Mike Futter on Sep 20, 2013 at 05:19 AM

One of the big questions still floating amongst gamers is how current generation versions of titles will look against their more advanced cousins. Whether we're talking about Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, or Watch Dogs, we haven't seen much of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 iterations.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is getting out in front of the issue, though. Speaking with Eurogamer, Kojima has confirmed that the next-generation versions of the upcoming entry in the series will run at 60 frames per second. Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions will run at 30 frames per second.

He says that Metal Gear Solid V was created using Fox Engine, which is currently tuned for the current generation. Kojima indicates that it "might look a little behind" other games that are being developed exclusively for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The gameplay is the same across generations, but the resolution and lighting are improved on Sony and Microsoft's new hardware. Metal Gear Solid V is slated for a 2014 release.

Our Take
While this isn't a surprising revelation, it's smart for Kojima to set expectations early. With less than two months to go before the release of the new consoles, gamers still don't have all of the information they'd like to determine whether upgrading early makes sense. Until we see comparison footage of Call of Duty: Ghosts and Watch Dogs, for instance, it's hard to understand whether those games are going to be fulfilling experiences on current hardware, or if upgrading is the way to go. At least we know what to expect when Metal Gear Solid 5 hits next year.
