Former Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi Passes Away
Former Nintendo president and video game legend Hiroshi Yamauchi passed away at age 85.
Nintendo has confirmed Yamauchi's passing due to pnemonia in a hospital in central Japan. Yamauchi took over the company after the death of his grandfather in 1949, transforming the playing card company into the video game juggernaut it is today.
He left his position with the company in 2002 to his successor Satoru Iwata; sitting on Nintendo's board of directors until 2005. Yamauchi made many major decisions during his tenure, including spearheading Nintendo's move into electronic gaming as well as hand picking the games Nintendo would release.

Yamauchi's influence on Nintendo and the industry cannot be overstated. Not only did he transform the company's focus towards toys and then video games, but he set up Nintendo's R&D internal studio structure and had the foresight to understand what made a particular game fun. He recognized the work of geniuses like Miyamoto and made the company a place where their talents could flourish.
