The lights are on
Nintendo's latest console, the Wii U, hasn't fared well on store shelves, and a lot of gaming enthusiasts seem more focused on the upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but does that mean Nintendo could soon be irrelevant? Industry luminary, Nolan Bushnell thinks so.
In an interview with the BBC, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell said, "I don't think handheld game-only devices make sense anymore. Not when you have an iPod or an Android microtablet. When it comes to the console market, I think the market is truncating. Nintendo always had a soft spot for young people - they sort of did the 12-and-under pretty well, and the other guys did the 12-and-over. And now I think the other [consoles] are good enough on those things, and the rush to upgrade from the 12-and-under is not nearly as important."

Our TakeIt's true that Nintendo's Wii U has failed to live up to sales expectations, and Nintendo's relevance in the handheld market also seems to be waning. I don't want to say I agree with Bushnell, but Nintendo does face some very serious challenges in the next few years. I'd hate to see Ninendo become obsolete, because they've been an integral part of the gaming landscape for decades, but the industry has continued to evolve and Nintendo rarely keeps pace with modern innovations. Sure the company is innovative in it's own way, but the Wii U hasn't caught enough interest to justify its production. I hope Nintendo has a few surprises up it's sleeve for the next year, because I still want to believe that Nintendo is a champ that can climb back to the top.

Handheld devices make complete sense because from what I've seen, android games are a waste of time. They provide no lasting impression and most of them are utterly pointless. There are some exceptions like Eufloria, but that one also released on PC and consoles. There is a NEED for handheld devices for mobile gaming because android gaming is not really gaming at all. You can only have so many Bejewled copies before it's boring fast.
I suppose the founder of a company that developed as many 'flop' consoles as they did would know a thing or two about when to call it quits, right? I mean, thank goodness they stopped trying after that abomination of a console, the Atari 5200.
Just bought myself a Wii U, but havin lots of fun toates drunk on brandy... *** its a good system kinda reminds me of Dreamcast without the shizzy selection...
I love ye' olde nintendo games. But ***, how is this news?
Stay put Nintendo!
Nolan Bushnell says Nintendo is on it's way to becoming irrelevant?
Where's Atari? Oh, wait........
I totally see his point. Hope they get back on track soon!
no Nintendo don't burn!!! we need you we need competition against ms an sony.. we must keep balance ladies
Nintendo will adjust to market conditions, much like when they stopped making gaming cards and moved into other areas.
Say what you want, but Nintendo is the master race.
I'm sure that Nintendo will stay at its place.
This is ridiculous. I listened to nonsense like this and didn't get a Wii because it "wasn't HD." Now I find I missed out on better experiences than I found on my 360. I mean it's great that I can play catch-up (unlike XBone or PS4), but it would have been nice to play them when they originally came out. Nintendo doesn't just make great experiences for kids. They make great experiences, period. I'm not missing out again.
Nintendo has a tendency to bounce back unexpectedly when things look bleak. What makes this guy think it will be any different this time?
Well in the next few months nintendos gonna be bring out some pretty good stuff,il pick one up then.
