First Xbox One TV Commercial Courts Football Audience

The first television spot for Microsoft's Xbox One aims to sell the console's advanced media functionality to football fans during the opening weekend of NFL games.

The spot actually doesn't show any video games at all; it wouldn't be surprising if someone totally unaware of the system thought it was some sort of advanced home media server or Tivo type device. Once again, it's clear that this is Microsoft's play to make the Xbox One the center of your home entertainment.

Our Take:
I have a sneaking suspicion how the comments are going to play out on this story. This commercial almost seems designed to raise the hackles of hardcore gamers. For me, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Microsoft has shown a commitment to getting good games on its system, as evidenced by another strong showing by Titanfall at PAX. Honestly, I use my 360 for Netflix Instant and Hulu Plus, it's been a great feature that I didn't even think about when the system launched. Despite the protests, I think most gamers are the same way. Who among us doesn't watch movies or television? As long as the games are there, I'm all for more ways to view my favorite media. This isn't the first Xbox One TV commercial that I would make, but Microsoft has a strategy and they are sticking to it. It will be interesting to see how it's received. I expect there to be some backlash.
