Layoffs At Irrational Games

by Mike Futter on Sep 05, 2013 at 10:50 AM

Update: Irrational Games has issued a statement on the layoffs

In an effort to streamline our processes I am sad to confirm that we let go a total of 8 employees today. Any studio’s greatest asset is the group of people that make up the whole, and as such it was extremely hard to make this decision and there is never a good time for this to happen. As co-workers and friends, we wish them the very best.

The developer declined to provide additional information, including the number of staff members it currently employs.

Original Story:

According to reports, Irrational Games has laid off a number of employees today. The studio, which is wholly owned by 2K Games, is said to have let eight employees go.

According to a statement provided to Kotaku, there is no effect on the development of the anticipated Bioshock Infinite DLC, Burial at Sea. The first half of that content is expected later this year. We have reached out to 2K Games to find out how many staff Irrational current employs.

Our Take
Layoffs are never fun. With Bioshock Infinite's rapid descent down the NPD top 10 list (especially for as well-received by critics as it was) and the long delay of revenue tied to DLC, these cuts are unfortunate, but not entirely surprising.

Our thoughts are with those affected.
