Gearbox And Blackbird Interactive Collaborating On Homeworld: Shipbreakers

by Mike Futter on Sep 02, 2013 at 12:50 PM

When the second THQ auction was completed and Gearbox acquired the Homeworld license, many fans of the series were disappointed that Blackbird Interactive didn't come away with it. The studio was founded by Rob Cunningham, one of the original leads at Relic Entertainment (creators of the Homeworld franchise). Now, the license has come back home.

At a PAX 2013 Gearbox panel, CEO Randy Pitchford announced a recently inked deal between the studios that will put the Homeworld license in the hands of Cunningham and Blackbird for the purposes of making Homeworld: Shipbreakers. The deal comes with a multi-million dollar investment, and Blackbird is now hiring to bring the project through to completion.

In addition, Homeworld and Homeworld 2 will be released in classic and HD formats in the first half of 2014. The HD versions include upgraded animatics and textures. Pricing and release dates have yet to be completely locked in.
