Steam Workshop Added To Gateways

by Jeff Marchiafava on Aug 30, 2013 at 09:35 AM

Fans of the indie puzzler Gateways can look forward to a host of new mind-bending laboratories to explore, thanks to a free new level editor that has been incorporated into Steam Workshop.

Developer Smudged Cat Games has added a full-fledged level editor to the Steam version of Gateways, which allows players to create completely new levels and puzzles using all of the objects and environments of the base game. Players can also browse levels within Steam Workshop, and import them into the game. I played around with the editor for a few minutes, and while it's initially confusing, the developer has provided in-depth directions for using the tools.

So far there are only a handful of levels available through Steam Workshop, including one made by the developer. The main version of the game featured a massive, Metroid-style laboratory, so we look forward to checking out the developer's new creation and seeing what sprawling, puzzle-laden levels the community comes up with.

Gateways is now also available on Mac and Linux. Find out more at the developer's website.

Our Take
thoroughly enjoyed Gateway's inventive new take on Portal's space-jumping gameplay and was particularly impressed by the game's challenging puzzles. Getting a free expansion from the developer is great, but I'm even more psyched to see what the community comes up with. If you haven't checked out this inventive indie game, now is the time.
