Nintendo Is Releasing A New Handheld Called The 2DS

by Mike Futter on Aug 28, 2013 at 05:42 AM

This is not a joke, nor is it a typographical error. Nintendo has announced a new handheld that strips the 3D out of its popular 3DS device. The Nintendo 2DS is a real thing, and the form factor is different than its brethren.

The 2DS is a slate-like device that doesn't fold. The target of the lower price point device are youths, and the 2DS is described as an "entry-level" portable.

It will retail for $129.99 and come in red and blue. It will be available on October 12, 2013, which is the same day as Pokémon X and Y. It will play all DS and 3DS titles.

Our Take
The form factor on the 2DS is very odd. My children both have Nintendo portables, and I love that they can fold up to protect the screens. These will be harder to care for, and the screens will likely suffer more damage faster without the benefit of a clamshell.

There's a market for a device without the 3D function (which can be fully turned off on the 3DS) at a lower price point, but the design on this seems off. The release timing (alongside Pokémon) is masterful, but not being able to easily transport it might make the 2DS stumble at the cash register.
