The lights are on
This is not a joke, nor is it a typographical error. Nintendo has announced a new handheld that strips the 3D out of its popular 3DS device. The Nintendo 2DS is a real thing, and the form factor is different than its brethren.
The 2DS is a slate-like device that doesn't fold. The target of the lower price point device are youths, and the 2DS is described as an "entry-level" portable.
It will retail for $129.99 and come in red and blue. It will be available on October 12, 2013, which is the same day as Pokémon X and Y. It will play all DS and 3DS titles.
Our TakeThe form factor on the 2DS is very odd. My children both have Nintendo portables, and I love that they can fold up to protect the screens. These will be harder to care for, and the screens will likely suffer more damage faster without the benefit of a clamshell.
There's a market for a device without the 3D function (which can be fully turned off on the 3DS) at a lower price point, but the design on this seems off. The release timing (alongside Pokémon) is masterful, but not being able to easily transport it might make the 2DS stumble at the cash register.

so kids dont break their 3DS, and yeap this is the answer.
I bought two used DS Lites on ebay for like $40 a pop for my young kids. Granted they don't play 3DS games but if your kids are under 7 I don't think they are going to care or know the difference. Really strange product offering from Nintendo that seems to be filling a niche that doesn't exist.
If it wasn't for the God-awful design this wouldn't be that bad, I can see the appeal of buying a 3DS without 3D so you can play all the games that come out for 3DS. But that design, it's just flat-out awful and I cannot imagine anyone being comfortable with that.
I would be all over this if it didn't look like the deformed mutant spawn of an Android tablet and a 3DS' shameful night of hard drinking to the sounds of Stairway to Heaven played backwards on loop.
Okay, I just might get this. I have very limited 2d vision and while it doesn't effect much of my life (other then my inability to catch and you'll see me gauge distances more carefully) it makes the 3DS pointless for me. That and the price point was bad. This really works for me. Also a flat 3ds would make it more rigid and capable of taking a beating from my kids. That is if I found a game for them.
So this is Nintendo's strategy to take back a considerable amount of business lost aye. Is to release a another portable cheaper & to give a price cut to the WiiU. Really Really let's see how much this spurs sales for this holiday season lol
Ugliest handheld since the N-Gage. Something is seriously wrong with Nintendo.
It reminds me of a tablet or an Ipad. And now that there is no flip screen, it just seems inconvenient to take anywhere. Its definitely Ipad-ish.
I still can't believe they actually thought that design was a good idea. I'm sure it will sell a lot of units being released with Pokemon but how does the new design make it more child-friendly?
I agree that there's a market for a 3D-less 3DS, but that design is ugly, and it looks very uncomfortable to hold. It does look durable though, so I'll give it that.
This is probably for those whose parents are concerned about the warning labels on 3DS games.
Either way, this could sell very will since it has a cheap price and has Pokemon X and Y releasing along side it, even if the design is very "Meeehhhh."
Not a terrible idea to have a cheap, 2d only hand held that can play the 3ds and ds games. I would be interested to play some stuff like mario and pokemon, but it doesn't look good and the inability to fold the screen up doesn't make sense.
I need to say, i laughted when i knew about this
This should fix the issue of parents of younger children saying "I want to get a 3DS for my 6 year old but the 3D is bad for his eyes and I'm too incompetent to dig around for 3 seconds and find the parental controls to turn 3D off :( "
