The lights are on
This is not a joke, nor is it a typographical error. Nintendo has announced a new handheld that strips the 3D out of its popular 3DS device. The Nintendo 2DS is a real thing, and the form factor is different than its brethren.
The 2DS is a slate-like device that doesn't fold. The target of the lower price point device are youths, and the 2DS is described as an "entry-level" portable.
It will retail for $129.99 and come in red and blue. It will be available on October 12, 2013, which is the same day as Pokémon X and Y. It will play all DS and 3DS titles.
Our TakeThe form factor on the 2DS is very odd. My children both have Nintendo portables, and I love that they can fold up to protect the screens. These will be harder to care for, and the screens will likely suffer more damage faster without the benefit of a clamshell.
There's a market for a device without the 3D function (which can be fully turned off on the 3DS) at a lower price point, but the design on this seems off. The release timing (alongside Pokémon) is masterful, but not being able to easily transport it might make the 2DS stumble at the cash register.

I was sure this was a joke... This is pretty weird. After actually giving it some consideration, it's not a bad idea, albeit unnecessary. The 3DS isn't so expensive that they need a 'cheap' model. Also, the weird form factor, I think, is going to turn off a lot of potential customers.
This makes me sad...
It looks like it's actually just really small? In the picture the stylus is almost as long as the device is tall, and the triggers are located on top, meaning that whole thing should about fit in the palms of your hands. That size would make the overall design fine with me, but it seems like the screens would be way too tiny.
This is the dumbest *** to be release by Nintendo. Specially since the 3ds can play games without the 3d function anyways but in this there is no option for it. two 3ds is already backwards compatible. three its a *** idea. 4. weird design.
Nintendo, you just keep getting weirder and weirder...
Holy *** i just realize something they should call it Gameboy 2
Im confused, whats the point of this thing again?
That is one butt ugly piece of trash
But they still couldn't add a 2nd stick on the right side? Plus, that footprint is horrendous. You can't close the screen. Yuck. The idea is awesome; execution is bad.
They should make a 4DS next. Then, when you screw up on a boss battle, you can go back in time and replay without suffering the ignominy of defeat.
