Square Enix Head Talks Successes, Confirms Tomb Raider Reboot Sold More Than 4 Million

The head of product development and studios for Square Enix posted a blog about the company's year. By far, the most successful product for the company is the Tomb Raider reboot.

In the blog at Gamasutra, Darrell Gallagher discusses change and how the company was tasked with making bold changes to such a core franchise. "The 2013 Tomb Raider reboot was received amazingly well," Gallagher writes. "We now sit in a great position where the decisions we made and the willingness to embrace a new direction resulted in the fastest selling game in the history of the franchise and the most critically acclaimed title ever produced from the studio." He confirms that so far the reboot has sold over four million copies worldwide.

Gallagher also says that Sleeping Dogs was a "profitable game for the business."

Our Take

Square Enix had high sales expectations for its Tomb Raider reboot, expecting 5-6 million sales, making the company restructure its management earlier this year. These were pretty unreasonable expectations, so it's great to see more people at Square Enix acknowledging how successful this title was for the company. Also, seeing Gallagher celebrating Square Enix's achievements and talking positively about publishing decisions is refreshing, even acknowledging Sleeping Dogs' latest appeal. Hopefully, more is on the way from both franchises.
