The lights are on
The head of product development and studios for Square Enix posted a blog about the company's year. By far, the most successful product for the company is the Tomb Raider reboot.
In the blog at Gamasutra, Darrell Gallagher discusses change and how the company was tasked with making bold changes to such a core franchise. "The 2013 Tomb Raider reboot was received amazingly well," Gallagher writes. "We now sit in a great position where the decisions we made and the willingness to embrace a new direction resulted in the fastest selling game in the history of the franchise and the most critically acclaimed title ever produced from the studio." He confirms that so far the reboot has sold over four million copies worldwide.
Gallagher also says that Sleeping Dogs was a "profitable game for the business."

Square Enix had high sales expectations for its Tomb Raider reboot, expecting 5-6 million sales, making the company restructure its management earlier this year. These were pretty unreasonable expectations, so it's great to see more people at Square Enix acknowledging how successful this title was for the company. Also, seeing Gallagher celebrating Square Enix's achievements and talking positively about publishing decisions is refreshing, even acknowledging Sleeping Dogs' latest appeal. Hopefully, more is on the way from both franchises.

I loved Hitman, Sleeping Dogs and Tomb Raider. All three games were simply fun and fantastic in my book. I can see why Square put high sales numbers on them, but they should have been realistic given the age of the franchises, outside of Sleeping Dogs being an abandoned "True Crime" game, the fact it sold anything is an impressive feat.
Loves tomb raider. So far one of my best games this generation. Can't wait for the sequel!!
Gotta love Tomb raider, one day I'll have them all!
Regardless of how any Tomb Raider sells, the Lara Croft just won't die as a character icon of the industry. Same with Superman or Batman's films having bombed in their pasts. The still do another one over and over again because people continue to care about seeing their heroes. Same with female gamers having their heroines.
Paid full price for Tomb Raider - awesome reboot/game. If they update it for the Ps4 or Xbone, will double dip - that's how good it is to me!
Although I miss the classic Lara, I did really like this game. Too bad they couldn't blend the two story lines so the bajillion games that came before this one don't have to be forgotten as if they never happened. It feels weird when you look back at a franchise's legacy. I know some of the games had their problems and I get why it was updated but an origin story that rewrites everything we know and thusly erases all that was, makes me a sad panda. I am still looking forward to the sequel. : )
Isn't this the same company that said that Tomb Raider was a massive failure?
They can't seem to make up their minds.
Great game. The biggest fail was the "New Game Plus". Why allow the player to go back and get all of the collectables and salvage for upgrades IF ENEMIES DON'T EVEN RE-SPAWN? There's nobody alive to even use your maxed out weapons on... However, the game itself was spectacular so I really can't complain.
Yes! One of the best games of the year that will unfortunately be overlooked by games like Bioshock, The Last Of Us, and GTA5.
When I first saw they were remaking Tomb Raider at E3 2012 I rolled my eye's and have very low expectations for it, however when I finally got around to playing it I couldn't put it down....They did a fantastic job with this and I can't wait for the next one!
WHERE'S MY SLEEPING DOGS SEQUEL?????
I'm glad to see him acknowledging the game as a success. If 4 million copies sold isn't something to be happy about, that can't be good.
SLEEPING DOGS WAS PROFITABLE!!!! I can once again sleep at night.
I loved this game!!! The 3rd person camera, along with the controls, cover and gun-play mechanics were amazingly enjoyable!!! ^_^
I give the new Tomb Raider a 10/10. Just beat it this weekend. Loved the game. Amazing. Second favorite game this year behind The Last of Us.
I still remember SE saying it WASN'T successful, even though it sold much more than FFXIII-2.
