The lights are on
The game director at Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios has announced that the MMO will follow a monthly subscription model.
In an interview with GameStar, Matt Firor, game director at ZeniMax Online Studios, confirmed that players will have unlimited access to the game for free for the first 30 days after you buy the game. At the end of that time, you'll pay $14.99 per month for the game.
"Charging a flat monthly (or subscription) fee means that we will offer players the game we set out to make, and the one that fans want to play," Firor said. "Going with any other model meant that we would have to make sacrifices and changes we weren't willing to make."
Firor also mentioned that the company would announce discount opportunities in the future, such as decreased per-month cost if you buy multiple months at a time.

That was definitely a bad decision. I will not be buying this game anymore.
The beta is terrible, nothing like The Elder Scrolls, except maybe the environments. I feel bad for those who will pay for this piece of crap because it seems ZeniMax Online have no idea what they're doing.
Better than F2P model. As long as quality of game matches the price I won't mind.
Wait a year, it'll go f2p due to low subscription numbers.
Has anyone played the beta? How is the game?
What I am hoping is that it will be a quality game. I look at gw2 and it's a rather good game(except for the annoying mini updates) without the subscription price. And even though it's on a f2p model it still pumps out content and plays like a p2p. Based off of other MMO's like SWTOR where they did do something like that but a half a year later they saw a huge drop in numbers due to a lack of endgame content(which confounds me how many mmo players don't like to reroll), they had to eventually retreat to a f2p model in order to keep people playing. Same with Rift and probably WOW in a year or two.
The only way the p2p business model can work is if you provide a masterpiece product that can keep the populous entertained for however long they want to play. And due to the nagging needs of the current gaming community they are going to have to release expansions about 2 months after release. Well not really but you catch my drift.
After paying 60$ for the game...paying Internet bill, Xbox live fee now add $15 a month to play one game...
No.
Yep....I knew deep down this was the case since they have REFUSED to talk about there pricing model ever since this game was announced....They have been trying to get people super stoked for this before they told everyone and frankly I don't know anyone that was super excited for this before they announced this.
Well I was willing to give it a go if they had done the Guild Wars 2 model of paying for the box and they having basically cosmetic stuff you can buy....not going to buy it even with a free month.
For fans of Elder Scrolls this shouldn't be an issue. We pay for game updates and new DLC, so to pay a subscription for a game that offers so much I don't see the big deal. You can all complain its fine there are tons of fans that will fork over the money. Already have my PS4 pre ordered Already planning on getting the game and if I have to pay for it GREAT! I would pay 30 bucks a month to quest with my friends in the world I have grown to love over the years. Free to play is nice but when it comes down to a quality game I'd pay anything to play it.
And here it is. The number one reason why I don't play mmo's. They could have at least offered a f2p limited model, like SWTOR and Tera do. Or gone the route of GW 2.
I was really interested in this game and this killed it. I can't afford to spend $180 a year on a single game.
I guess I will wait until it inevitably goes B2P/F2P.
Was nothing learned from The Old Republic? There is simply too much competition nowadays to have a monthly fee like this. That's why World of Warcraft is losing players, and that's why so many other MMOs are either free to play or have become free to play.
It's a shame really. I was kind of looking forward to this, but I simply don't want to make this much of a monetary commitment to a single game.
