Wii U Web Framework To Support eCommerce

Nintendo’s Web Framework, a forward-facing development environment, allows users to create games and applications for the Wii U using common programming languages like Java and HTML5. The development toolkit is conceptually similar to the one currently offered by Microsoft for Xbox Live Indie Games. Unlike Microsoft’s, however, Nintendo’s development tools will now support post-launch monetization through purchasable items like DLC.

As reported by Engadget, Martin Buchholz, manager of developer relations at Nintendo of Europe, revealed this news earlier today at GDC Europe. Nintendo’s Web Framework eCommerce support won’t necessarily amount to in-game or in-app purchases, and should provide incentive for developers to port their extant games and apps to the Wii U.

Our Take
Nintendo's Web Framework toolkit is a great addition to the Wii U, and has already been used by developers to create useful apps like Google's Wii Street U. For a gaming system that has thus far struggled to attract consumers, appealing to small developers with community support seems like a smart step.
