Ubisoft's Child Of Light Is A Callback To JRPG Classics

by Mike Futter on Aug 19, 2013 at 01:45 AM

At GDC Europe today, Ubisoft's Patrick Plourde revealed details about his JRPG-inspired title, Child of Light. The title will draw from the glory days of SquareSoft's work, most notably Final Fantasy VI.

Plourde, whose most recent role was as director of open-world shooter Far Cry 3, will be using the UbiArt Framework that powers the stunning visuals in Rayman Origins and the upcoming Rayman Legends. His team reportedly numbers under 40, a significant difference in scale from almost everything else happening at Ubisoft.

Child of Light will be distributed digitally, following in the footsteps of other mini-AAA offerings, including Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. We don't yet know on which platforms Child of Light will be published, but Plourde stated that the title would not be on mobile when it arrives late this year.

Our Take
The UbiArt Framework is responsible for the vibrant and fluid visuals of both recent Rayman titles. I've been eager to see the engine used for other titles, and it's great to see something different (read: not an open-world shooter) coming out of Ubisoft with Michel Ancel's creation under the hood.

The throwback nature of Child of Light, including the references to classic illustration and the opera scene from Final Fantasy VI, put the title on my radar. I'm eager to see what Plourde is able to do as he flexes his creative muscles.
