The lights are on
Evidence of a new PlayStation 3
model, which features 12GB of storage and will retail for $199, has surfaced.
The website Engadget broke the news, based on a page on the Canadian retailer
Future Play's website. The page was removed, but not before Engadget grabbed a
screenshot (see above).
It's also published a picture of
allegedly taken in the storeroom of a Kmart location, which shows a box of the
new PS3 hardware with instructions to not display until August 18.
This 12GB Flash memory model of the
PlayStation 3 has already been on sale in Europe, but was not thought to be
coming to the United States.
Our Take:It's always good to have more variety of price points available to gamers.
However, considering that you can buy bundles of the 500GB PlayStation 3
packaged with an upcoming game like GTA V for $269.99, this 12GB model doesn't
seem like a great value. However, it is a glimpse into the future; as Flash and
solid-state memory become cheaper to produce, we expect that mechanical hard
drives will eventually go away in the console market.

Well if you buy this you can always buy a hard drive for it.
12 gb isn't even enough to download all the updates.
12GB?!! that won't hold crap! Bioshock 1's install is 12GB alone! Fail Sony! At least make it 30GB.
Why? That is all I have to say.
And yet the Vita still sits at $250.00.
yeah I would pass, simply due to the amount of games that require installs, and the large size on some PSN titles.
Of course though, if you could load this up with a laptop HDD like older models, it could be a decent bundle. But the 500gb model with a game bundled would likely be best, assuming you want the title included.
If this is true, why?
For $50 you can buy a 1tb hdd for the ps3 so not bad
Given that you have to install massive amounts of data per PS3 game, this actually sounds kind of stupid. You can have a full third of that taken up by simply installing 4 games.
If you didn't have to install pretty much every PS3 game, it'd be fine. But since you have to--it's a little short-sighted, and the price is kind of silly.
Okay - I have my ps3 already so this isn't targeted to me and my gymorgous 500GB HD swap I did some time ago ....
But still asking $200 for 12GB system just seems like a Scrooge D!$& move to me ...
That thing needs to be "at most" 99.99$ :D
12 gig on a ps3 is like a 40 gig on xbox360 lol what a stupid idea
$ony is being greedy with this. Way too much money. Sorry $ony, you screwed the pooch, I'm canceling my PS4 pre order and getting an Xbox one.
How many new models are there for PS3?
12gb? That is so little amount of memory.. Well, good if you have some extra external HardDrive around, but if not, its better to grab 500GB PlayStation 3.
Can you put your own HDD into it? Otherwise, that 12GB is practically nothing
Kind of a bad deal. I could see 150... Maybe. But 100 would be better.
