The lights are on
We knew that the Xbox One's Kinect could be turned off in the settings, but today we've learned even more. The Kinect 2.0 need not even be connected to the Xbox One.
The news was revealed in an ongoing question and answer session IGN has been conducting with Xbox chief product officer Marc Whitten. "That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor," Whitten wrote.
Should you wish to leave the device connected, the Xbox One will prompt users to turn it on should they attempt to use anything that requires the Kinect. When off, the cameras and microphones are not receiving external data. This news is the latest in a long line of policy reversals, including a system-wide shift in digital rights management, indie self-publishing, and including a headset in the box.
Our TakeThe door is now open for a post-launch, Kinect-free Xbox One. Microsoft is putting the device's value in the hands of developers now. Given all the gameplay data that developers and publishers can collect, you can bet that there will be statistics generated based on optional Kinect usage.
We might never see them, but if Microsoft decides to drop it from the box along the way, we'll be able to read between the lines. For the security conscious among you, does this change your mind about the Xbox One?

so therefore, microsoft must have a "no-kinect" bundle for the XB1. (maybe that will drop by.. $60 i think.
I was a huge supporter of Microsoft and am still a big fan of my Xbox 360, which I plan on continue playing for many more years, but since the whole Xbone debacle I'm a afraid I'm going to jump ship to the PS4 when I do finally get around to upgrading my console. Microsoft can backpedal their policies all they want and give me the system I want but until they have the same kind of compelling exclusives that Sony has I'm not interested.
i am soooo happy now.... i hope they will make it 4oo without the kinect
Optional means not everybody will have it, meaning there will be not as much development for it..... we have the same story about the firs kinect repeat itself.
ahhh, and what will happen to the processing power the kinect was doing? I remember they said part of the processing power was in the kinect, what will happen now? even less processing power than before?
It looks to me like they are not sure about what they're doing or they don't know what to do.
I was considering it, but I am wondering what will it be of the console and of the kinect.
Preorders are out almost everywhere, isn't that telling them that they were doing all right before they did this reversal?
Still sticking with PC (waiting for Steam box). But this does make me hate the Xbox One less.
lol they have basically changed everything i wonder how sales between xboxone and ps4 will go now
Yes, it helps to know that I won't be watched while I play games. You know, so I can touch myself while I game.
Twice the fun, half the time.
MS needs to get rid of Major Nelson.. no offense to Major Nelson, but he´s not really helping the company by being in the spotlight.
Get some one more informative and credible to do the appearances.
At least MS knows what not to do next time they make new hardware, and decides to show and talk about it.
Can't win me back M$. Your misleading and manipulative business tactics are the reason why I am leaving you. Not because of what the Xbox One80 has or doesn't have in the box. I have outgrown you M$. Goodbye
This fanboy crap has got to stop. Everyone grow up. MS messed up. They are fixing it. Its good for the industry. Its good for us, regardless of which console you buy.
