God Of War II Director Cory Barlog Rejoins Sony Santa Monica

by Mike Futter on Aug 09, 2013 at 07:48 AM

Sony has announced today that Cory Barlog, lead animator of God of War and director on God of War II, has rejoined its Santa Monica studio. Barlog most recently directed animations for Crystal Dynamic's Tomb Raider.

Barlog's post on the PlayStation blog doesn't offer much detail on what he's working on, but there is clearly a lot of excitement. "We’re putting together a team as I type this, an Ocean’s 11 kind of thing," he writes. "We are searching the world high and low for the best of the BEST to come and be on the ground floor of this endeavor."

It's worth reading the entire post to get a sense for Barlog's (mis)adventures along the path that brought him back to Sony Santa Monica. We're eager to find out just what he's working on.

Our Take
Barlog is back to lead Sony Santa Monica into the next generation. The studio is currently working in partnership with Ready at Dawn (responsible for the fantastic PSP God of War titles) on The Order: 1886.

It's a safe bet that this is a new tentpole project for the PlayStation 4 (and the Vita if we're truly lucky). Is it a new God of War? Is he part of The Order team? Is this another brand new IP? With Barlog's pedigree, I'm willing to play whatever it happens to be.
