The lights are on
Considering how many hours we pour into video games, getting attached to the characters and world isn’t all that surprising. The most amazing part is how something so artificial can cause such a response, even getting into our psyche. Did having a child’s life in your hands make Heavy Rain terrify you? Were you overly protective over Clementine in The Walking Dead? Did Mass Effect’s finale cause you to tear up?
It’s time to fess up about the games that got under your skin. But please be mindful of spoilers and post a spoiler alert before you delve into specific moments.
I’ll fully admit, I cried my eyes out during the finale of The Walking Dead. And the devastating abruptness of The Last of Us’s opening stunned me. Also, saying goodbye to the Mass Effect universe that I’d grown so attached to brought mixed emotions. I knew that it always meant to be a trilogy and prepared myself to saying goodbye to the cast, but seeing my journey end was bittersweet.
Why do you think the games that got to you this generation did so? And what do you hope the next generation learns from them?

The game that really got me this gen for like the first time ever was Red Dead Redemption. I guess because I did not know anything about it when I bought it and the fact that I invested so much time into it; first time I would complete a game 100% this gen. *SPOILERS* at the end when your in the ranch trying to save your family in my head I was like yeah you can do it John just like all the other times we will make it through this just one more time. Then your stuck in a barn surrounded and when he peeks through the door and you see all them police men that's when I started to doubt. I swear I thought I could kill them all since it goes to dead eye as soon as you walk out lol but nope; I could not believe what I had just witnessed a good man looking for redemption shot to death after trying so hard to re-do his wrongs, I had tears in my eyes; but it felt so good when I got Edgar Ross back I unloaded all my bullets from my mauser pistol into him I think I even called him a *** while I sot him up hehehe.
Portal 2 and Borderlands 2 made me laugh alot. SPOILERS Gears of War 3 really got to me with Dom and his wife and then what happeneds to him, I always chose him for multiplayer so when he died in campaign I was mad.
How can I forget Journey in this list that little 2 hour game got to me as well it was a great little story I was tearing up but smiling at the same time.
The game that I have played recently that also got me teary eyed was The Last Us but not as much as Red Dead I guess because I kept on hearing all these things about it, next time I will not look at anything (besides traiers and release dates or multiplayer) about a certain game I'm interested in. I still had many moments where I was teary; scared, and mad. UC3 I was scared for Sully. So yeah thats about it for me.
I would say the last of us and bioshock infinite. The last of us to me personally is the best game this console generation. I definitely teared up more than once during that game. Bioshock infinite primarily due to the relationship you establish with Elizabeth. Incredible work done by Ken Levine and Irrational games to get the player to actually care about an npc character. I remember the scene late in the game where Elizabeth is about to be operated on by the doctors, I literally jumped out of my seat telling the npc's to let go of her while I was sprinting to save her. I don't think I've ever been that emotionally attached to an npc character. Same goes for Ellie in the last of us. Also, the ending of halo 4 was emotional for me. I've been playing the series since its inception in 2001 and have adored the campaign story line. Seeing what happens to Cortana at the end of the game was very difficult to watch and i'll admit that I cried a little. Kudos to 343 studios for a campaign that had a much darker, mature tone and was better because of it.
i would have to say Walking Dead or the beginning of The Last of Us. It was so erupt for a game. after the beginning i was like: WELL THEN. The portal finale was cool, but not really emotional for me. I have never cried for a game but probably the games i was most emotional about was the Infamous series.
Bioshock Infinte,
**Spoilers**
When Elizabeth tells the Songbird "It's ok, you can let go, I'm here now." I had a hard time with that. I had told that to one of my loved pets that passed away before I played this game.
Journey - All of it.
Halo 4 - The build-up and ending of Cortana's story
The Last of Us - The relationship between Ellie and Joel
Bioshock Infinite - The relationship between Booker and Elizabeth
Mass Effect trilogy - My Shepard's relationship with Garrus and the fact that I'll "always have [his] back." That, and Anderson's death.
At least, that's the ones just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more.
Actually, none, though I loved emotional games like The Walking Dead.
Oh god thats a loaded question..
Well theres the obvious choices like the bioshock infinites and the walking dead, loved both games, found characters I loved, lost characters I loved, and had a wonderful experience with amazingly written characters and deep interesting story telling. Those would be the option for games that have a deep emotional and mental point to them, but even games like awsomenauts,FEZ,Rayman origions, little kings story that are on the lighter side have a place in my heart. All in all its been a wonderful generation, and iv enjoyed my time with it a lot,and theres far too many games to talk about beyond these, from the fallouts to the super mario galaxys, its been a delight to be a part of this generation.
Well recently The Last of Us showed me how I can really despise a character. That character being Joel.
Don't get me wrong. I got much love and respect for ALL systems. These guys work their tails off, nonstop and constantly competing for the best publicity. To come up with a product which is better in every way possible. Believe me, its no easy feat.
Although I like PS4 and XBOX ONE, alike, its all going to boils down to MONEY, if you know what I mean ;)
I am not even one for zombie games generally, but I would have to say that The Walking Dead and The Last of Us basically made me raw with emotion. The Last of Us was so beautiful in every way.
mass effect series. walking dead.
The walking dead, Mass Effect and Gears of war for me. I think they get us so much now because more and more video games are getting so much better at telling stories. It's becoming more like playing an interactive movie.
Recently- The Walking Dead, BioShock Infinite, and The Last of Us.
I must admit that there were three separate occasions when I did infact cry in The Walking Dead chapters. Also, one additional time when I just absolutely hated myself...
