The lights are on
Update: Sega has provided us with a statement on the concerns regarding Company of Heroes' 2 historical representation of the Soviet military. "SEGA and Relic are aware of the press stories circulating concerning Company of Heroes 2 and the historical context of the game from a Russian perspective," a Sega representative told Game Informer. "At this time we cannot offer any further comment, however we are taking this issue very seriously and are investigating these concerns thoroughly with all relevant partners."
We asked Sega to identify who Relic used to insure historical accuracy, but the publisher has declined to comment.
The problem with historical representations, is that they represent history. But what happens if events aren't depicted accurately? Over 17,000 people in Russia are claiming that Sega and Relic haven't fairly represented the USSR's World War II army in Company of Heroes 2, leading to the game being removed from retail.
A petition to remove the game from Steam has garnered significant support for Company of Heroes 2's depiction of the Soviet Army as under-equipped. Additionally, retailer 1C-SoftKlab has stopped selling the title. In a comment to Videogamer.com, Sega has acknowledged the concerns and indicates it is taking the matter "very seriously."
Company of Heroes 2 was, in part, responsible for Sega's strong performance in its most recently completed fiscal quarter. The title sold 380,000 copies in the few days it was on the market during that period.

Our TakeI reached out to Sega to find out who Relic used to ensure that their representation of Soviet/Russian history was accurate. Obviously, different experts are going to have different interpretations of the events, but knowing that the developer did confer with an academic authority on the era would go a long way to understanding if this is nationalist pride or a misrepresentation of historical events.

of course, when hate rears its ugly head we can always bash republicans and rush limbaugh, but let us look at reality for one moment. The soviet union in the ww2 era saw genocide at a level not seen in the world before or after. Nearly 100 million russians were ordered to be killed because the Communist party deemed them a threat of control. The KGB had controlled every last part of their lives through SS style tactics. You were forced to work 12 hour days, 7 days a week. Women, children, it didn't matter. This was not a proud time in Russia's history, just as the Nazi era wasn't germany's. Yet, we have numerous video games and movies showing Soviets to be kind and caring of their men. This is just not true, and this game apparently shows the truth. The Soviet government had aligned itself with Hitler and Mousillini in the mid 1930's to create the original "axis" powers. This was a ruse by hitler to lull the soviets into a false sense of security, until hitler deemed it fit to invade. Hitler planned his invasion of russia to start in early spring to avoid being caught in the Russian winter. All was going as planned until Italy invaded greece and bit off more than it could chew. Hitler had to bail them out and his invasion was delayed until mid summer. The attack on stalingrad was a success in part because they caught the soviets off guard and they were poorly armed. It was a slaughter, and even when the soviets armed forces crossed the river, thousands of russian regulars were sent to their deaths. The commander of that army was Nikita Kruschef, a man not known for the care of the common soldier. The Soviets orders were to take back the city of their great leader's namesake....by any and all costs. Once the russian winter kicked in the tides turned. The Russians knew how harsh their winters were, and even though their weapons and vehicles were primitive in comparison to the German's, it was designed to work in extremely cold conditions. The german's tanks, guns, and artillery all failed and allowed the Soviets to take the offensive. Historical facts and accounts of former Soviet soldiers and officers proved that the soviet union was not well prepared for the Nazis, but that the Nazis were not prepared for Russia. Hope this helps.
Shouldn't it be ensure, not insure?
I think its news worthy to report that customers who have brought up concern of this issue on their forums are having the threads locked by moderators. The mods are also showing a lack of decorum when responding to people.
OK y'all do realize this is a video game and not a history book, so maybe just lighten up a tad.
God Bless America!
Yes, because games made by Russian Devs paint a much more realistic image of the Soviet Army's performance in WWII. Such as War Thunder, which realistically depicts the Soviet Air Force's gloriously physics-defying UFOs armed with period accurate 20mm chainguns and laser death rays. Or World of Tanks, which renders a stunning picture of the Soviet Army's high-speed scandium-armored battle tanks armed with 175mm auto-cannons that fired depleted-uranium sabot slugs, which could out-perform entire Wehrmacht Panzer divisions while outnumbered 4 to 1.
None of you have any idea what you are talking about. Russia beat the Germans on the Eastern front during WW2 because of Lend Lease - the USA supplied them with what they needed to win the war and they began to turn the tide at Stalingrad. That's not to say that they didn't fight bravely and lose millions because they did but this recent trend toward American guilt in popular culture makes me sick. Stalin was a mass murdering maniac as bad and probably worse than Hitler.
This is nothing more than Nationalist Pride and international Dick-measuring. Stop watching revisionist garbage by morons like Oliver Stone and pick up a book.
This is almost like Blizzard with China. Wargaming (Russian company that created World of Tanks) almost had with China when they added the Chinese tanks and trust me. Those tanks sucked...yeah it was National Pride BS as to why.
So seeing this. Really.....has any Call of Duty Games or for that matter games that dealt with WWII ever been banned from Germany?? Or games dealing with the US in a bad light been banned? I mean most likely have been and I don't know.
Still this whole deal is total BS. YET! YET! We are talking about Sega. Sega does EVERYTHING half-ass. They should just fold as a company because they are RUINING the market. I am still upset with Sega with other things than this. "Taking it Serious" my arse. Most likely not doing anything.
Awww, Now my friends in Russia can't enjoy such awesomeness.......Sorry Charlie. Someone is being mean.
sounds like russia is butthurt. youre mad that you were represented as an under equipped army during ww2? thats a historical fact. russian soldiers in the rear had to pick up the rifles of their dead comrades because russia didnt have enough money to arm its ridiculously large population. russia sounds like a worse place to live with every piece of news that comes out of it. you can be arrested for being gay there, and they ban things that picture them in an unflattering historic light? sounds like a place i never want to go.
Russians are some of the most nationalistic, xenophobic human beings on planet Earth. Not to mention they butchered more people than the Nazis
Yet they will never stop demonizing America/West which is interesting...
