The lights are on
Following a story last week about the PlayStation 4's RAM profile, Sony has taken the opportunity to provide clarification. As you might recall, last week we shared a report that the PlayStation 4 held 3.5 GB of RAM for operating system functions, 1 GB of which would be available on a flexible basis for gaming. Sony has provided a correction.
In a statement issued to Eurogamer's Digital Foundry, Sony addresses a key technical matter from the original story.
We would like to clear up a misunderstanding regarding our "direct" and "flexible" memory systems. The article states that "flexible" memory is borrowed from the OS, and must be returned when requested - that's not actually the case.The actual true distinction is that:
We have no comment to make on the amount of memory reserved by the system or what it is used for.
This changes the outlook for development, possibly opening up significantly more available memory. The implication from Sony's comment is that the processes in place for handling virtual memory will be largely seamless and easy enough to use. The intent seems to be that regardless of the direct allocation, the flexible memory will be available for gaming.

Our TakeWe still don't know how much memory will be reserved for the system, and Sony's statement doesn't shed light on that yet. However, the process detailed in the statement made to Digital Foundry provides confidence that more than the 4.5 GB of direct memory and 1 GB of flexible memory will be accessible for game purposes.

Well, the statement was a little vague, but I trust Sony to do the best that they can.
If 1 gig of 3.5 is "flexible", and as Sony puts it, only used for the game, then that makes it 2.5 gigs for the OS, the rest for game resources. Lets not forget this is DDR5 RAM, which is about TWICE as fast as DDR3 RAM.
This means that games will be running with full 64bit support? I hope so :3 woo!
Hey, people. The PS4 games you've seen already? They're using how ever much ram the PS4 is allowing outside the OS.
Knowing how much RAM The Witcher 3 is using does not concern me in the slightest. It still looks amazing. This information changes nothing about the PS4 games we've already seen, and those that we have already seen are rather impressive.
That does clear a little bit of it up. When I first saw the article, I was wondering what the hell......
I hate when companies fire PR "blanks" just to run the question around the room instead of actually answering it. Virtual memory is a joke when it comes to using it for application reasons. A computer's system architecture reaches out from the processor(s) to the L3 Cache memory first (fastest), then dedicated RAM (second fastest), then HDD or SDD memory (third fastest, getting faster with newer drives), and lastly the Virtual Memory which is extremely slow compared to the others and is only used in cases of extreme system load. If Sony is referring to Virtual Memory as RAM allocated only to the game that's ok, but if they mean literal "virtual memory" then that's a joke in speed.
So if I read it right then the PS4 has 5.5 Gb of ram available for games (with 1gb of that ram reserved as "flexible")??
Regardless since we are now comparing PC architecture, I think people should keep in mind that it makes the software structuring more malleable than the previous iterations.
By this I mean, almost all of the windows OS have gone through patches to have them be optimized. Vista got patched into Windows 7 and the dredded Security Update patch 2. I imagine softwares on the consoles will now be that much easier to modify (by the devs ofcourse) and optimise.
We are living in an digital distribution age, the margin for errors in the final product is a lot more flexible now than it was 20 years ago where a finished product had to as competent as possible on release. Since devs can get feedback and deploy adequate patches once the product is gone online. So I can absolutely believe in a few months the OS for both systems will be optimized and the space issue wont matter (that is until someone comes up with crazy PC requirements to run a surreal game).
