The lights are on
Update: Polytron has released a statement on its website about Fez II's cancellation and Phil Fish has stated that he cancelled the game in the interest of leaving the games industry.
Here's the full statement from Polytron:
FEZ II is cancelled. i am done. i take the money and i run. this is as much as i can stomach. this is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign. you win.
Additionally, Phil Fish tweeted, "to be clear, im not cancelling FEZ II because some boorish f*** said something stupid, im doing it to get out of games," and followed up saying, "and im getting out of games because i choose not to put up with this abuse anymore."
Original story:
Polytron and Fez creator Phil Fish sent out tweets today, and confirmed via e-mail, announcing Fez II has ceased development.
Fez II was announced during E3 with a brief teaser, but otherwise no additional details have been revealed about the game. We reached out to Fish to confirm the game's cancellation to which he replied, "yup. it's over."
It's with a heavy heart that we announce that FEZ II has been cancelled and is no longer in development. We apologize for the disappointment — Polytron (@Polytron) July 27, 2013

Our TakeI am very disappointed by this news. Fez was my personal favorite game of 2012, and I was looking forward to the next project from Fish. I speculate that the cancellation is a result of Fish struggling with the public's perception of him from his appearance in Indie Game: The Movie and his outspoken tweets, based on his recent interactions on Twitter. I personally think he is often unfairly vilified by the online gaming public. Fish has made succinct statements like this in the past, for example deciding to no longer tweet and returning a few weeks later, so I hope he changes his mind and Fez II returns. For now though, the game is officially cancelled.

***.
Phil Fish created a terrific little platformer, with the emphasis on "a." He's done one game, and while I will be somewhat interested to see what he comes up with next, it's not as if we lost '80s/'90s-era Miyamoto or Kojima.
A pity. :(
i'm sure theres a good reason behind it , possibly like going a different route with the next game hes planning and ideas changed or something hence it no longer applying to the name
it's unfortunate that Phil can't separate himself from his work enough to act like an adult in the face of intense (and possibly unfairly exaggerated criticism)
Fez was a great game, but Phil clearly has a problem even interacting with other people, much less understand the nuances of PR management, indie community participation, and respectful dialog in the face of people vying for attention.
Phil: You didn't deserve to be treated like that, but seriously: Grow up or Get out
Who cares. Play Fez again if you really must.
Wasn't Fez II only announced a few months ago? What gives?
Unfairly vilified? If he wasn't such an enormously pretentious ***, I'd agree with you. But he is. And this just proves it. "Oh no the internet doesn't like me, I'm not making this game anymore." Boohoo.
He's an ***
Somebody start a kickstarter for this game right now
Man. I read Phil Fish's meltdown on Twitter. I was defending the guy since Indie Game: The Movie, but seriously? A guy yells at him ON THE INTERNET, Fish fits out, AND HE CANCELLS THE GAME? Seriously dude, c'mon!
Never liked the guy. I don't mind people that are outspoken, but with how people are on the internet these days he should have known better than to say some of the things he did. Oh well, what goes around comes around buddy, enjoy not making anything.
This guy is a ***.
Any criticism Fish gets is deserved, he acts like an entitled egotistical asshat. Too bad his game has to suffer because of his attitude.
Phil Fish is a jerk. Not sad about this at all.
