The lights are on
Today, Activision announced that it is buying itself out from under Vivendi's shadow, but that's not the only recent news coming out of the mega-publisher. WoW's subscriptions continue to decline.
We've seen World of Warcraft's subscribers continue to dwindle for a few years now, and Activision Blizzard's most recent report puts subscriptions at 7.7 Million, falling from 8.3 million subscribers only a few months ago. In spite of this shrinkage, World of Warcraft remains the world's largest subscription-based MMORPG.
Our TakeI don't really find this surprising. WoW has had a good, long run. World of Warcraft debuted back in 2004, meaning it's been a staple of the gaming landscape for nearly a decade. The game has been a massive cash cow for Blizzard for a long time, and even if it dies now, it will have been well worth its development. Personally, I'm eager for Blizzard to finally put the game to rest so we can see what the company has lined up next. And I don't just mean the company's next MMOs. I'm sure that Blizzard held off releasing another WarCraft RTS while WoW was active in order to avoid splintering the brand, but that may not be the case much longer!

World of Warcraft will not "be put to rest."
I would kill for another Warcraft RTS...
A decline is far off from it being dead. I do think that we will see it laid to rest within the next few years as we see its popularity continue to dwindle but at 7.7 million subs multiplied by the cost to sub per month which is $10 ,I believe, you are getting $77 million per month.
warcraft 4 would rock i like the brand more then starcraft
Been playing off and on since Vanilla and the major thing that's been keeping me from playing is the dead realms, but with the 5.4 patch they're going to "merge" realms without actually calling it a merger. I hope that will liven up the community because I do really still enjoy the game.
That's cause they all went over to Dota 2! Seriously though, those servers are packed.
I think EVE Online should be the #1 MMO. My gosh that game is great.
bound to happen eventually, was fun while it lasted. i say bring out another expansion with a different style of gameplay to cater to a new business model, a free to play one. that is the way forward. that will get me to download WoW and play every now and then, again. i will never pay the sub fee again though, it is simply not worth it games have advanced well beyond the WoW experience
It's had a good run so far and will probably continue to be an active game for at least another decade. It's still way too popular to die off anytime soon. As for me, I'd still love to play, pretty attached to my characters ( Especially my Shaman, Warlock and Death Knight) as well as the Warcraft universe, but sadly I'm not too keen on paying anymore, four expansions of subscription is more then enough hahah.
Unlike many, i never hated any of the expansions and always found something enjoyable or fun, be it new quests, raids, events and dungeons. People say one expansion or another is the nail in the coffin, but for me, it's simply the subscription charge. When I have guild Wars 2 and with the advent of mmos dropping subscription charges, why would I want to shell out $15 a month anymore?
I would love a warcraft IV. I'm not into mmos so the last one I did was frozen throne. I don't find it surprising either. It's gone on for so long and still 7.7 mil thing long after debut is still damn good I think. Interested in seeing where they go after with the franchise.
I always wondered when WoW would start to go on the decline. I mean, granted, it has been bleeding subscribers for a while now, but compared to its high of 13 million... Well, I think that approaching half of your top number is a good indication that the game is reaching the end of its lifespan. Of course, now would be a good time to introduce project Titan...
