The lights are on
In a new interview, Ouya head Julie Uhrman revealed numbers that confirmed the reports that – so far – Ouya owners aren't inclined to pay for games. In an interview with The Verge, Uhrman said that "Monetization on Ouya is so far better than we expected. It takes time to build what traditional consoles have had decades to build."However, the sales numbers she provided seemed fairly bleak. According to Uhrman, only 27 percent of Ouya owners have paid for content, with most choosing to use the system for free-to-play games, demos, and illegal NES and SNES emulators. The games that Uhrman cited as the system's most successful, TowerFall and Hidden in Plain Sight, have earned $21,000 and $4,381 respectively. This may have something to do with TowerFall creator Matt Thorson's recent announcement that he's bringing the game to PC.Uhrman also talked of increased developer interest in the system. There are now over 21,000 registered Ouya developers. In addition, she said the systems rate of upgrade from free to paid version (8 percent) is actually very good in the free-to-play market.Source: The VergeOur TakeWhile Ms. Uhrman can spin the numbers any way she likes, the fact that your system's breakout game (TowerFall) has only earned $21,000 is bad news. Given that the game sells for $14.99, that is only around 1,400 paid downloads. Which, simply stated, is pretty pathetic for a game as good as TowerFall. Between PC, mobile platforms, and next-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony that will be much more indie-friendly, small developers have a lot of options. If Ouya wants to succeed, it's going to have to convince the industry that it's a place where companies can make money.
All i got my ouya for was for the emulators. Other than that I haven't downloaded anything from the market. Nor do I plan to.
I always thought the Ouya looked kind of neat, but how do you put funds on it without a credit card?
OMG!!! Look at tablets??? Mom and dads use them for work, Kids play on them cause they are there.... Not many people buys tablets for just gaming, Cell phones!!! people don't get there new phone to play games, they play free games cause it's there...Most only plays these apps cause they are already on a tablet or phone that they bought to do something other on....Take OUYA most people not going to buy something to just play Apps on... heck I'm a die-hard gamer, My I-phone bought to make phone calls play games when I'm bored,. My tablet use for work, Grandson plays games on it cause He can,..I play games on my Xbox 360 & Ps3...soon to be Xbox1....
My interest in wanting to get one is solely to develop games on the device.
I think another huge turn off for people is the fact that OUYA is an android based gaming console, and the fact that OUYA games can't carry over to your other android devices (tablets or phones) is a huge mistake. What they should do is what Amazon did and create their own store, that can be side loaded onto any android device. That way they can play purchased OUYA games in an OUYA environment wherever they are. Then the draw comes from knowing that you could have a better experience on the actual console than using janky emulated controls on your mobile device of choice.
Man thats bleak
So... if they aren't buying games, then why have the console? The console will die if they don't buy anything.
Over-entitled idiots that want a socialist free-for all console are the people that buy Ouya. It's their mindset/personality. Those that do PC gaming have to the mindset of I earned what I paid for because "I realize it costs to be entertained since I EARN a living."
In honestly not surprised. I never expected the Ouya to do well. I hope it finds success but with free to play games you need a lot of people playing it to make a profit, and not enough people own it for most games to succeed. It almost reminds me of Nintendos situation only Ouya has even less hope in my opinion.
Well that sucks, but is anyone really that surprised?
not suprising at all considering most ppl only went with getting 1 ( least 1s i noticed) because it has ' a bunch of free games that u can use a controller with for only 100 bucks'
I haven't paid for a single game yet. But will be with the $13.37 they gave me.
